Special flag of Luxembourg used during the ‘Trounwiessel’ ceremony
Luxembourg is one of the few countries in the world that is still a Grand Duchy today. Here, the monarchy is not only a historical institution but also a living part of the country's identity. The Grand Duke is the head of state and represents the unity of the nation, acting as a link between the institutions and the people.
The current Luxembourg monarchy dates back to 1890, when the Grand Duchy passed to the House of Nassau-Weilburg, which still reigns today. As a constitutional monarchy, political power is exercised by the government and parliament, while the Grand Duke plays mainly an institutional and representative role. He promulgates laws, appoints the government and represents Luxembourg during official national and international occasions.
Although the Grand Duke does not exercise direct political power, he remains an important symbolic figure and maintains a strong connection with the population through public events, national celebrations and visits across the country.

The New Grand Duke of Luxembourg
On 3 October 2025, Grand Duke Henri abdicated, passing the throne to his son Guillaume, who became the new Grand Duke of Luxembourg alongside Grand Duchess Stéphanie.
The beginning of a new reign is traditionally accompanied by a series of public events and official visits that allow the new sovereign to meet citizens and visit different regions of the country.
The “Joyeuses Entrées”
One of the most important traditions marking the beginning of a reign is the “Joyeuses Entrées” (Joyous Entries).
These are official visits by the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess to cities and municipalities across Luxembourg. During these days, citizens welcome the Grand Ducal family with public celebrations, meetings with local authorities and festive events organised by the communities.
The Joyous Entries strengthen the bond between the monarchy and the people and celebrate local traditions.
The programme for Grand Duke Guillaume will take place between 2026 and 2027:
24 April 2026 – Esch-sur-Alzette
10 July 2026 – Troisvierges
2 October 2026 – Wormeldange
2027 – Beckerich
2027 – Mersch
Each city organises special events to welcome the Grand Ducal family, including cultural activities and public celebrations.

National Day – 23 June
Another key event in Luxembourg is National Day, celebrated every year on 23 June. This day officially celebrates the birthday of the Grand Duke and is one of the most important celebrations in the country.
Festivities begin on the evening of 22 June with concerts, celebrations in the streets and the traditional torchlight procession in Luxembourg City, followed by spectacular fireworks.
The next day features official ceremonies, including a military parade attended by the Grand Ducal family.
On the eve of National Day, the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess traditionally visit a different city each year:
2026 – Differdange
2027 – Ettelbruck
